A theme in the work of Marinka Reuten is the sense that everything simply slips by: light that disappears, memories that fade, voices that are forgotten. For her, this impermanence does not lead to melancholy, but rather to the encouraging realization that everyone is connected to one another through that ever-flowing stream of time.

Marinka Reuten paints with slow-drying acrylic paint. She builds up layer upon layer. Her paintings can have more than 20 layers. Despite this approach, the canvases evoke a volatile quality, as if they could simply drift away.
The stripes, patterns, and structures are an intimate focus on the smallest moment. They represent an attempt to grasp transience, to not only understand the fleeting nature of life but to embrace it. For it is in this repetition that comfort arises. A single stripe may seem insignificant, but within the larger composition, it finds its meaning.
In Marinka Reuten's photographs, trees, stones, and flowers usually play the leading role. Yet there is a parallel with her abstract paintings: whoever views the photographs steps out of time. For a brief moment, past, present, and future merge into one another. Despite the black-and-white and the transient nature of many of the subjects, the photographs tell an optimistic story, about a life that always continues, or at least always begins anew.
